Missing News...

You may notice the big gap in news from December 2008 till June 2009. Unfortunately due to a glitch in our usually sound updating techniques Derek managed to delete them all. So with proud historical revisionism we can now officially reveal that nothing whatsoever actually happened in those six months.

Some Notes From Derek

As you've probably noticed from the front page, the band will be taking a break for the month of July. This is because I am going on holiday to Europe for a month. Well actually, to Hong Kong, England, Paris and Chicago. This is the first long holiday I've had since we got the band together nearly 20 years ago and will be the first time I've been back to England since leaving in the early eighties.
Until then Nigel and I are hard at work in the Boatshed Studio trying to complete a number of projects:

1) Recording and mixing the debut single for Tauranga band The Mellow Drops.

2) Mixing the debut album from Hamilton rockabilly band Johnny Stash.

3) Producing a one-act radio play (an adult "pantomine") for Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O'Brien. Richard recorded a solo performance of the play - Pig In Boots - when he was over in New Zealand last and we are currently editing it, adding sound effects and recording the musical backing. Don't know where this one will end up but I will be staying with Richard in London and will play him our progress so far.

Juila Dean with Sonia and Nigel 4) Sonia's solo album. This is getting very exciting. Sonia has been planning a solo trumpet album, combining jazz and blues and her other influences, for several years. She started recording at the beginning of the year and a plethora of fine musicians have been visiting to add their contributions.
Gerard Masters (Nigel's nephew, superb jazz pianist, protege of Mike Nock), Julia Dean (Fur Patrol singer), Shaken Not Stirred, and of course the Kokomo boys have all contributed backing on a set of eight standards ranging from Miles Davis to Robert Johnson. Hopefully, the album will be ready to be launched at the Bay of Islands Jazz & Blues Festival in August.

And there's more, but that's probably enough for now. The whole band played on an album - Under The Influence - by Tauranga artist Dave Roy (released May 2009) and Nigel and I are preparing to record a second Self-Righteous Brothers album. Nigel, Grant and I are also planning to record an album of traditional blues. And then we have to make a new Kokomo record...

See you at a gig somewhere after I get back from my holiday.
Till then... Derek
