Recent Stuff...

OK. We've been a bit lax on the website recently, but only because things have been a little quiet. Quiet on the Kokomo front that is. Other stuff has been happening and I'll run through a little of that.

First of all, Sonia is preparing her first solo album. She will be recording it at the Boatshed studio, probably starting in January. It will contain a mix of jazz and blues with styles spanning her career. Several well-known musicians and singers from around the country are expected to arrive to add their musical brilliance to the project.

Meanwhile, Grant is also getting stuck into the studio and will be recording his first proper song in the next couple of weeks. It is an ode to the worm farm he helps out at and to it's wriggly occupants. I'll be playing slide guitar and Grant has cracked out many varieties of harmonica (some of which I've never even heard of!) for interesting sounds and textures.

I've also been hard at it in the studio finishing production on John Michaelz new gospel rock album Walk On Water. This epic project is turning out really well and now has a record label attached for release in the new year. It's a really big gospel rock sound, harking back to Dylan's Christian period albums. Why is an atheist such a myself involved in this? Well, the music's great, John is a friend, and someone has to try and keep these Christians on the straight and narrow...

And our friend Richard O'Brien is back in town for a couple of months. He came down last weekend and sang with Nigel and me at our Sunday Self-Righteous Brothers gig at Miils Reef (see picture above). Lovely to see him again and we retired to the Boatshed afterwards with lashings of chardonnay, prawns and a crayfish. A fine and excessive time was had by all.

More soon... Derek

Boatshed Files 4th December 2008

More wild & crazy nights at the studio in the last month, most notably with Richard O’Brien & the usual cast & crew (no picture available) sipping cocktails poolside till the wee small hours. You’ll all be pleased to know Richard’s chauffeur drove him home afterwards. Richard is threatening to record a couple of his new tunes whilst he’s in town - looking forward to that.

Mike King, complete with film crew, has been in recording top secret heavyweight corporate scripts. Mike is such an amiable chap we can only hope he pops back again soon (see picture).

Shona Laing is booked in for early next week to continue work on her next record. Shona has been on an exhaustive winery tour with singer songwriter Monique Rhodes, including dates in Christchurch, Marlborough & everywhere else.

Hamilton Band, Johnny Stash are still working on their record. They will be in on Friday 5th to continue with what will largely be a Rockabilly CD.

Jill Briar from Rotorua has booked the weekend to start production on a possible EP which will feature Rotorua blues guitarist, Mike Garner. Incidentally, Paul Garner is coming home for January & will be playing at the Rotorua Blues weekend & has asked me to join him on bass. That’s not necessarily studio news, more of a memo to Derek to keep our management team up to date. (Note to Nige: Kokomo are playing that day as well -see the gig guide.)

Monty-Cello with new mates Other news - the double bass now has a little companion, Monty (Monty-Cello). Very tricky instrument the cello. They say it takes 5 years to be able to play a note that won’t frighten the horses. Having spent a day on it & tried recording a couple of tracks on Dave Roy’s almost finished record, I quite believe it. Yes, Dave ‘s CD is almost finished. The background is that Dave is an artist who does music for therapy. Since meeting him I can say that I’ve had to do exactly the reverse to stay sane.

Anyway, that covers it for now, save to say that since word got out that I intend to start dating again, young women from all over the place have been ringing to book a spot by the pool for the holidays. Don’t worry, I’m in serious training for this already.

Nigel.
