THE WOODFACE FILES Pictures and news from Grant on fringe happenings around Kokomo…
YIPPEE! Our latest album In The Well has been completed and is awaiting official release. We all had miles of fun down at the Boatshed recording this selection of Dylan songs and the result sounds fantastic. The artwork on the album cover comes from In A Different Light, one of the non-corrugated paintings in my 2007 exhibition Wrinkles And All. In A Different Light takes a closer look at Bob Woodface as a subject, his flaws and cracks illuminated by the glow of the fire-pit (the scene of many a late-night fireside jam at our place!). The vibe of the painting seemed to go with the album name and the band all liked it so we used it. For a closer look at this painting and others check out Grant’s Art Gallery in the Picture Gallery.
In the Art Gallery a lot of the pieces are on corrugated coloursteel, so in their descriptions I’ll abbreviate to corrugate. The pieces labelled W&A are from my exhibition Wrinkles And All and if the year is other than ‘07 they are from the retrospective section of the exhibition. The pieces labelled 4 sale are available for purchase - if you would like to express an interest in them contact me here with "Artwork" in the subject line.
At the moment in The Boatshed our great friend (and sometimes co-writer of Kokomo songs with Derek) John Michaelz is recording an album called Walk On Water. I had the great pleasure the other day of laying down some harmonica for the title track and a jumpy wee tune called “The Word”. The album is going to be awesome with a mainly gospel feel but invariably branching off into different genres including a reggae/ballad-like translation of “Show Me Your Colours” (there’s a Kokomo version on Songs Of Love And Not), and a beautiful duet, “In Your Arms” with Shona Laing. Watch for the release later this year.
Last year I took some great photos of John with Woodface and other friends at the Hard To Handle Reunion Concert at the Colosseum in Tauranga.
This seems a good place to start a new album in the Picture Gallery called The Woodface Files, which will chiefly be groupie-shots of Bob with different musical types but covering other fringe aspects of Kokomo. I’ve included some photos of Woodface on the road with us in Te Kuiti and the original fire-pit photo Jan took for inside the booklet of In The Well. Unfortunately the sequence of photos are completely random as I’ve yet to discover the secret to keeping the photos in the picture galleries in order.
More soonish… cheers... Grant
ISSUE #2 COMING SOON.... In the meantime I've put a few more pictures in Grant’s Art Gallery in the Picture Gallery including BEACH PATH, a piece I sold to some hardcase Aussies at the Gisbourne Working Art Fest (a great Art Fest, well-organized), another Wrinkles & All piece called DARK POOL and SHELLY BEACH, a piece based on a design by our good friend Shelly Foster.
