April 2008

The Littleweed Festival

Littleweed is an honest to God hippy festival, lurking deep in the heart of the Bay of Plenty. What a delight it was to be there! In a beautiful orchard amidst stalls selling unidentifiable vegetarian food (much of it Indian, much of it yellow), chai, kaftans, and unlikely health treatments, were two stages and a host of other unlikely attractions (a cinema!).
Grant, Nigel and I played on Saturday afternoon as The Self-Righteous Brothers Blues Ensemble – a great chance to dig back in and play some old blues – and had a wonderful time.

We tore through a particularly good set (though I do say so myself) and the general vibe of relaxation and happiness made for a memorable time. We rarely get a chance any more to wallow in the old blues that I love (what with Kokomo playing largely our own songs and Bob tunes these days) and it was a real treat. As we said after the gig - we must do it more often...

Murray Haddow & his Orgestra We were following a couple of poets, the legendary Sam Hunt (wonderful as always), and Auckland's new punk poet Murray Haddow, performing with his Orgestra. Our friend and sometime drummer Bruce Morley was part of the Orgestra - all of whom appear to be completely crazy, in the nicest possible way - and we really dug their set, particularly the extremes of broomstick bass, umbrella guitar and electric shovel (not pictured!).

Later that night we caught percussion ensemble Strike, who were outstanding – incredibly energetic and visual – before retiring to play Stonewall at Grant & Roger’s Stonewall stand. Good to see the game as popular as ever.

On Sunday we caught a very good set by local Tauranga band the Mellowdrops (moody prog-rock sort of stuff) and then the Little Bushmen, whose soulful psychedelic excursions were just perfect for the beautiful country setting. All up a fantastic weekend! We can only hope that Littleweed continues to shine its friendly light in future years.

There are a few more pics in the "Various Pics 2008" section of the Picture Gallery and, for the record, we played the following:

STEALING (Trad)

DIDDIE WAH DIDDIE (A Blake)

BYE BYE BLUES (T Johnson)

DOWN IN THE FLOOD (B Dylan)

COCAINE BLUES (Trad)

FISHING BLUES (H Thomas)

PLASTIC JESUS (Unknown)

TROUBLE IN MIND (R Jones)

SO MUCH TROUBLE (B McGhee)

All the best Derek
