The legendary Georgie Fame, keyboard player and jazz singer par excellence is performing in Tauranga on February 23rd at Baycourt Theatre and has asked Derek to appear as a special guest during the blues segment of his show.
Georgie has played in Tauranga once before, at the National Jazz Festival during Easter 2007. Kokomo were lucky enough to be invited to play support for the great man and had a storming time. Earlier in 2007, Georgie made a brief visit to Tauranga which happened to coincide with Derek's birthday (see picture - Georgie and Derek with concert promoter Colin Lunt). Master Dutch bluesman Hans Theessink (pronounced Tay-sink) is touring New Zealand again. Derek and Nigel played support for him the last two times he visited Tauranga (2005 & 2006) and can confirm that he is really really good! He is a very fine acoustic guitar player with rich barritone voice and a deep understanding of the blues. Yes, Hans is well worth catching, and if you are in Tauranga you can see him at Mills Reef Winery on Thursday February 21st, with Rotorua bluesman Mike Garner playing support.
