Mills Reef Summer Series Show A Brief Recording Update

Mills Reef Summer Series Show

There are more photos in the Picture Gallery - many thanks to Brendawyn Leeves for sending us some cool pics!

On January 3rd the band were happy to play again as part of the Mills Reef Summer Series (with another sell-out crowd!). This year the weather was just good enough to have the show outside and the band were joined by Ian "Beano" Gilpin on drums and Mike Kirk on electric guitar. As you might notice in the gallery pictures, Sonia is now very pregnant - this was her last public gig before having the baby. (A girl! Which is expected in March/April.)

And it was a great evening! The band kicked off at 6.30pm and debuted a new breakneck speed arrangement of Any Road Up, Nigel sang The Ballad Of Kowhiterangi and The Glory Of True Love (a John Prine song, also new for Kokomo), and Derek and Nigel spontaneously broke out Guy Clark's Boats To Build for Brian and Claire, owners of the Weekend Sun and dedicated boating folk. Later on Derek and Grant played a couple of old blues tunes as a duo (Bye Bye Blues and 29 Ways).

It was also the anniversary of Brook's death, so the band of course played Song For Brook (Angels). All in all it was a special night and lovely to be making music in the beautiful winery as the sun was setting. Thanks to everyone who came along, it was good to see old friends and make some new ones - a fine way to start 2007!

A Brief Recording Update

February looks like being a busy month for recording. The Boatshed will be hosting the wonderful Shona Laing who will be spending two weeks recording a new acoustic album. Nigel and Derek will be engineering and Nigel will most likely be playing bass.
Derek will also be hauling the rhythm tracks for the upcoming Dylan tribute album down to Brian & Tracie de Jong's EIEIO Studio in Pongakawa to record his acoustic guitar parts and some vocals.
In amongst all this, John Michaelz is still in the process of recording his new gospel album at the Boatshed with Derek producing. The eight tracks put down so far have been sensational, and he's planning to also record a version of Kokomo's Song For Brook (Angels).
