The Upcoming Dylan Tribute Recording SessionsBrief Notes from Derek Well, Grant and Sonia are away up North for the week - Sonia is teaching music at a special annual music school in Opononi - so we can have a brief pause for breath in what has been a crazy-busy time. Aside from a wedding that Nigel and I are playing as The Self-Righteous Brothers on Friday, there are no more gigs till February. So, I just thought you might be interested in what's going on in the recording part of Kokomo-world.
We haven't recorded with Matt before, so we're all very excited about it. Some of you may wonder why we aren't recording this with our more regular drummer from Tauranga Ian "Beano" Gilpin, or Bruce Morley from Auckland who was on various tracks of both Little Heroes and Songs Of Love And Not, and the only reason is because we also love Matt's playing and want to try something different. Each drummer brings their own style to the songs and much as we really enjoy playing the Dylan tunes live with both Beano and Bruce, we thought Matt's quirky percussionist sensibilities would take a recorded collection of Dylan tunes in a different and possibly more unusual direction. Brian de Jong, who engineered the Self-Righteous Brothers album will be over again to help out and, with luck, Tracie de Jong will also be on hand to offer her invaluable opinions. We plan to press her into service on the odd harmony vocal (though she doesn't know this yet!). We have also been talking to guitar virtuoso Nigel Gavin (who played a set with us and Matt at the Whangarei Jazz Festival last year) about playing on the album and he's very keen. We've long been fans of the amazing Mr Gavin, so that would be a real highlight for us. In the meantime, we continue to mix the tapes of the live album, recorded last November with Beano and Mike Kirk on electric guitar. They are coming along well, but the process seems even longer and slower than usual since we're so busy with other stuff. Hopefully I'll have another mp3 to post here before the week's out. That's it for now - if you want to know in any more detail what we're doing just drop us an email. Otherwise, see you at a gig somewhere. All the best - Derek |

Mills Reef Summer Series Show
The concert in Tauranga on 5th Jan as part of the Mills Reef Summer Series was extremely successful (for a sell-out crowd). The only unfortunate thing was the weather, which meant the band played inside the restaurant at the winery rather than on the lawn. Other than that it was a blast. Once again Beano played dums and Mike Kirk joined on electric guitar, and John Michaelz came on to sing "Burden Down" with Derek.
