Adventures On Kawau Island
On November 12th the band made an intrepid journey to Kawau Island to play a birthday party for Kawau resident Michael Marris. This was certainly the most unusual and adventurous gig we've played for a long time (probably since the last time Kokomo ventured over to Great Barrier Island - what is it about islands?!), what with putting all the gear on a water taxi for the trip over and carrying the entire set-up 200m up a cliff on a flying fox! (It took four loads on the flying fox, while Nigel and Derek carried their instruments up the 260 steps - more of a problem for Nige with the upright bass!)
It was also one of the most enjoyable weekends we've had in recent times: Michael and his partner Gabrielle - and his very generous friends - all looked after the band wonderfully. There were about 15 people for dinner and we played a little before that - doing both Self-Righteous Brothers as well as Kokomo tunes - and then well into the night when a few more of the island's residents arrived and joined the dancing. Much fun was had all round. We stayed just across the water with Aine and Robert (the Man in Gold, if you've seen the pictures!) - at the water's edge, just about the most entrancing spot you could wake up in the morning - then we had another little session on the balcony around the breakfast table, overlooking the turqoise waters of the small inlet. Pictures of this astoundingly beautiful spot have now been posted in a special section of the Picture Gallery. A big "Thank You" from the band to everyone who made the weekend so special - we only hope the guests enjoyed it as much as the musicians! |
