Better Left Unspoken (D. Jacombs/J. Michaelz)

This was a song written in response to the abduction of a small boy in Havelock North, from his bed in the middle of the night. When Tracie asked me about what mood it should have I said "Total despair". At the time I thought her singing was too "up" - I wanted it even bleaker - but it sounds great to me now. They even played it on Shortland Street!  We re-recorded it on Little Heroes because I wanted to sing it and do it more slowly.

No one knows what goes on in the neighbourhood at night
Behind the picket fences out of mind and out of sight
There's monsters in the garden and creatures in the trees
And a window standing open in the cool autumn breeze

      CHORUS

Some things are better left unspoken
Some things are better left unsaid
Tomorrow morning the sun will still be shining
Tomorrow night the same moon will light you to bed

Don't act like a stranger when we've all been here before
Don't offer cheap solutions to the things you can't ignore
There's rats in every kitchen and ghosts in every bed
And no one knows what's buried out behind the garden shed

      CHORUS

      Somewhere ther's a doctor, somewhere there's a priest
Somewhere there's a mother who still cries herself to sleep
The undertaker doffs his hat and blows a weary horn
And somewhere in the distance one more child is born

      CHORUS
