(Lyrics - M. Gilchrest/Music - L. Hurley)Luke Hurley, the terrific singer/songwriter/guitarist is a friend of Tracie and Brian, and sent us this when he heard that we were recording a "blues" album. The only problem was that his version (which he
had never released) wasn't even vaguely bluesy, despite the song title - it sounded more like an old English folk song to me! So we completely re-arranged it, adding what I thought would be the guitar hook behind the vocal, and swinging it.
Luke came down to Wellington and promised to play 12 string on the recording. Unfortunately, the first day he came in it quickly became obvious that he wasnt au fait with the new arrangement and after a couple of hours we had nothing that was going to
work and Martin was getting frustrated and wanted to move on.
So we gave Luke a tape, so he rehearse overnight and play it the next day. That night we were hanging out down on Courteney Place and who should we come across but Luke, really depressed after not cutting it in the studio.
Next day he came in and.... still hadn't listened to the tape. I was kinda worried by this point, and thought that we may have to skip his part but, bugger me if he didn't just sit down and completely nail
the tune! Not just nail it, but provided a counterpoint guitar hook so good that my one went out the window! He completely transformed the song and improved it out of sight. Go Luke!
