MISCELLANEOUS RECORDINGS & OTHER THINGS...

Most of the stuff here is pretty rare and obscure, but it does exist...

KOKOMO BLUES

Working Class Shuffle (video mix)     Limited edition CD EP 1997

To accompany the video for The Working Class Shuffle we pressed a small number of CDs of the new mix, which has extra slide guitar, hammond organ, and percussion. Also has the album version of Rainy Night In Taupo and Living In Limbo.

Dry Land (full band version)      Limited edition CD single 1998

This was released to bring a bit of attention to the terrible drought in Marlborough and Cantebury which the government were doing their best to ignore. Within 2 days of it going out to radio (during which time it got a fair amount of airplay) it started raining everywhere. We'd like to think that we were partly responsible! The song was later recorded in a totally different version for Little Heroes.

Nose Zone     New Zealand Longboarding Video

A 70 minute documentary about longboarding in New Zealand. Essential stuff for surfers everywhere. Features music from David Kilgour, King Loser, the 3Ds, and Peter Posa, as well as the G B Boogie  from To Be Or What under some very cool surfing footage. Available from Surfvision Video 0800 7873843.

The Living Earth     TV3 Gardening Show

Some obsessive gardener somewhere probably has the whole series on video. It ran for a couple of years and featured various instrumentals which we recorded especially for the show. Ragtime seemed to work particularly well with plants.

Various National Radio Docos (1995/1996)

There were two half-hour programs made in 1995 about the music on Stromboling and another two about To Be Or What in1996. All feature Derek talking about the songs (along with Tracie De Jong on the first two) and some of the songs are

different mixes. Again, somebody somewhere probably has them on tape.

DEREK - Solo

Don't Worry 'Bout Me (D. Jacombs)

On Tauranga compilation LP, Behind The Kiwifruit Curtain (1987), under the name Derek Jacombs and the Buskers Of Experience. The first of three versions of the song - we later recorded it on Stromboling with Tracie De Jong, and Hard To Handle did it (see below) on The End Of The Beginning.

Don't Tempt Me (D. Jacombs)

Room With A View (D. Jacombs)

On Bay Of Plenty compilation CD, Picture This (1997), a collection of eight BOP singer/songwriters, including John Michaelz, Marion Arts, and Mahara Tocker. Derek also served as executive producer. Kokomo rerecorded Don't Tempt Me on Little Heroes but this version is quite different, very fast, and backed by just bass and 2 clarinets.

OTHER PEOPLE'S RECORDED & RELEASED VERSIONS OF KOKOMO SONGS

Don't Worry 'Bout Me (D. Jacombs)

The Working Class Shuffle (D. Jacombs/J. Michaelz)

On The End Of The Beginning (1995) by Hard To Handle. Derek also plays electric slide guitar on Noah. It's an excellent album - hard driving blues/rock and  well worth checking out.

Joy Joy Happy Happy (D. Jacombs/J. Michaelz)

On Goatepic (1998) by The Stone Babies. Their version of Joy Joy... makes quite an interesting comparison with ours (on Little Heroes ) - it's serious grunge/funk and was released as a single for which their record company renamed it Don't Ask Me Now. Don't ask me why.

OTHER RECORDINGS WITH KOKOMOS ON THEM

The End Of The Beginning (1995) by Hard To Handle: Derek plays electric slide guitar on Noah.

Double Shuffle (1995) by Dry Bone Shuffle: Grant plays harmonica on Old Suitacase Blues and Kansas City Blues.

Evolutionistic (1998) by Dann: Derek and Grant play acoustic slide and harp on Grain Of Salt, and sing on Stunning Individuals (notable also for Grant's amazing "punk washboard").

All Strung Out In A Bunch (1999) by Ritchie Pickett: Derek plays electric slide guitar on White Horses.

In Three Minds (1999) by Hinemoana Baker, Jane Siene, and Mahara Tocker: Derek plays electric slide guitar on Motel and I Could Be.

AND AS FOR NIGEL.....

Well, Nigel has had the Boatshed Studio running for about a decade and has played on many many albums, videos soundtracks, jingles and all sorts of stuff which has been recorded there. He also produced a stack of things. So much so that he barely remembers most of it. When we have far too much time on our hands we might get really anal retentive and try and put together some sort of list!

AND THE REST.....

There's a lot of stuff missed off this selection of miscellaneous recordings which will probably be added in time. There are also numerous tapes and videos kicking round of live shows. If anyone has any particularly memorable live recordings,
