Bonfires (D. Jacombs)

Another song that I had had kicking round for a while but, since it was rather more personal than anything else I'd written, I had kept it under wraps. Tracie actually cried the first time I played it for her. She is such a sweetie.

When we recorded it I could barely get through the vocals because of the bronchitis I was trying to shake and was convinced that I had screwed the song up irredeemably, but when we came to mix it the vocal didn't sound as bad and later it was nominated for the "Best Vocalist Award" at the 1995 Bay Of Plenty Music Awards. You never can tell.

The esplanade mentioned is the St Kilda Esplanade in Melbourne which I lived close to for a year before coming to New Zealand.

It's some time in the morning and the sky is overflowing with stars
I thought that I'd just drop a line to find out how you are
There's music on the stereo - old Lightning laying down some blues
A glass of wine in one hand: so tell me, what's new?

It's funny, it's the first time I've been back here where we used to stay
The river looks the same, it's still that funny shade of grey
I took a walk by Luna Park and down along the esplanade
The bonfires are still burning out across the factory yard

The old boys ain't around now, they've all given up the chase
It's much easier to sit back and reflect
They've smartened up the restaurant, it's all candlesticks and lace
The manager there won't serve us now, but what can you expect?

I heard that you got married:well I know you always wanted to
I hope you found somebody who is good enough for you
Me, I'm still out drifting - never found the time to settle down
The grass is always greener in the next town

I guess I ought to tell you why I never kept in touch
After all the times I told you that I'd try
Maybe Im just lazy, don't like writing letters much
And it gets a little harder with each month that passes by

One day I might write you a letter I don't throw away
One day I might tell you all the things I want to say
Till then I'm just wishing you good luck, I thought you ought to know
You take a little piece of me wherever you go
